The story of every sports team is intertwined with the vision, ideas, and lives of its founding members, the athletic journey of those who took on the continuation of their vision, the coaches and athletes who represented them on the playing fields, as well as the fans who bonded with it both socially and primarily emotionally.
And the story of Aris is completely tied to the city of Thessaloniki, the White Tower, and the athletic tradition of the area from the early last century to the present day. From 1912, when the city was liberated from Ottoman rule, until the spring of 1914, a group of young athletes aged 16-18 sought to reconnect with the ancient Greek sporting ideal and engage with the new, exciting sport of football.
By choosing the name 'Aris', the founding members of the club wanted to denote athletic strength, competitive passion, and the characteristics that accompanied the ancient god of war, such as imposing presence, grandeur that inspires respect and fear, and fierceness.
As the emblem of the club, they chose the 'resting god of war', a statue attributed to Skopas, which is located in a museum in Rome. Even the colors of the new club indicated significant symbolism since yellow and black were the colors of Byzantium, where Thessaloniki was always the second city of the Empire.
Moreover, yellow is the color that indicates youth, joy, liveliness, and energy, while black represents sadness, loss, and seriousness.
