This book is the first book on Historical Music Education that refers to Greek education. The author attempts to present and interpret the teaching of Music in Kindergartens and Elementary Schools in Greece from the establishment of the Greek state to the present day.
For this purpose, he presents and comments on the institutional framework concerning the teaching of Music and the corresponding education of teachers (detailed and hourly programs, laws, ministerial decrees, directives, circulars, etc.). He also presents archival material, publications of the time in educational magazines, opinions of educators and musicians, books, aids, songs, inspectors' reports on education, and more.
He approaches the evolution of music teaching over time, in conjunction with broader educational and social changes, influences, weaknesses, and emphasizes that the trajectory followed by Music education in Greek education was parallel to the goals and broader orientations of education and, therefore, society.
