We must be approaching a port. The sea, which has been raging for hours, has suddenly, as if by a miracle, calmed down. I try to gather my thoughts, to soothe my troubled soul. Through the dirty, salt-stained glass, I struggle to make out the land in the absolute darkness, vainly searching for signs of life in the place where, as everything seems to indicate, I will end my life. And yet, I just turned sixteen a month ago. It feels like entire centuries have passed since then. Despite my young age, however, I already know well. I will never return to Rhodes. My home, the faces I loved, the memories, my friendships, my joys, my emotions and my sorrows, my entire little world is ultimately doomed to be lost forever in the dark corridors of my mind, to disappear into the eternal world of oblivion. My whole past is going to slowly fade away, to be erased slowly but surely, both from my own memory and from that of those who ever came into contact with me. Despite any resistance I may have, in the end darkness will prevail and any flicker of my mind will fade like a flashlight flickering just before its battery dies.
