When, after the fall of Constantinople (1453) and Trebizond (1461), the need arose to preserve the identity of the inhabitants, the Christian population chose to ascend into the mountains for their salvation. And indeed, they succeeded, despite the losses suffered during their long subjugation, during which Pontus, this land of magical beauty and allure, transformed into a valley of hell, weeping and blood.
Many regions of Pontus have been fortunate enough to be historically recounted by distinguished lovers of history, both local and foreign. All are deserving of gratitude. Wanting also to contribute my own part in the historical narrative of our Pontus, I have focused on the history of Simikli of Chaldia, the most populous community of the Kourtouni river, since my paternal grandfather Alexandros (Alexis) Apostolidis hailed from there.
Moreover, no independent study on this settlement has been published until today. Therefore, I am delighted with the completion of this laborious yet affectionate effort for our Pontus, and I thank God and our pure Lady, the Most Holy Theotokos, whose monastery in honor of her Annunciation adorned Simikli, and I humbly pray that they strengthen and guide us, so that we may remain steadfast in our efforts to preserve the sacred and revered of our pious Nation.
