Horses, mice, dogs, moles, monkeys: animals appear in most of Kafka's texts, often taking on leading roles, coexisting –always with difficulty– with humans or living in their own, purely animal world.
This collection brings together Kafka's lesser-known animal tales, as well as selected short prose, which outline a psychological panorama ranging from the most agonizing existential anxiety to the most playful mood.
The translation is based on the critical edition of Kafka's works, which relies on the manuscripts and original publications and restores the interventions of Max Brod.
The study "Kafka's Animals," which complements this edition, places Kafka's animal protagonists within the context of Kafka's work, as well as European literature, highlighting key concerns and peculiarities and suggesting interpretative openings – windows for the reader – into the multifaceted work of the great Czech author.
