Drafts of the first writing of the book on foreign policy that mice consumed in 1948 in the attic of the old house at Aegina 1, Kypseli. Note by Dido Sotiropoulos on a page of her manuscript from Kodrigtonos Street.
After decades, a significant document for the international post-war political history and the "movements" that would forever change the global geopolitical chessboard comes to light once again. The first "between text and notes" version of her book on international politics in the early years of the Cold War is published, "my work that - as she used to say with a sigh - was eaten by the mice."
Unpublished material, which was unknown due to a caprice of fate and was rediscovered by another game of the same, seemingly, deity. "My book on international politics, which the mice ate...!" was the constant refrain whenever the conversation turned with Dido to 1948 and the illegalities.
Dido, upon leaving the house, burned or boiled down to pulp a huge number of manuscripts. The material she had collected while writing articles for "Rizospastis," since it had already been published, made no sense to destroy. Thus, she took it with her to the house where she sought refuge, a neoclassical building at Aegina 1 in Kypseli, which belonged to her sister-in-law M. Iordanidou.
In this house, Dido worked on all her material related to international politics, and as the illegalities had no end, she hid the completed form of the book in the attic. With the end of the illegalities in 1950, she searched for it and discovered with horror that the rodents had left not a single readable chapter.
Later, in 1995, when the apartment was donated to the Writers' Society, the renovation revealed the manuscripts intact. Only a small part of the book was formatted into text ready for publication. It was an intermediate state between text and notes and required a reassembly of the pages, so that not only all meanings remained intact, but even every formulation.
It is a fact that another book by Dido emerged, showing an unknown aspect of her, that of the very astute political analyst or, in today's neologism, the international relations expert.
With this publication, we honor the centenary of Dido Sotiropoulos's birth, on February 18, 1909, and 50 years since our first collaboration with the book "The Dead Await" (1959).
