The poems of Konstantinos Kavafis survive better than most translations. One reason for this is the interest of their content: homoerotic loves in exotic cultures, the condemnations of tyrants, the various intersections of the fates of sophists and wanderers, as well as oracles - his approach to such subjects is enough to convince a non-Greek audience of his generosity. Due to their psychological and political insight and their untouched intimacy with the processes of love and the city, his poems are immediately convincing and could withstand a conversion into prose. Kavafis, in fact, could have modified Wilfred Owen's famous apology for his war announcements ("Poetry is in the pity") and boasted about his own achievement, "Poetry is in the plot".
