Description

In two volumes, totaling 1,000 pages, under the title "Dear Georgios", the long-awaited correspondence of George Seferis with George K. Katsimbalis, the "colossus of Maroussi" according to Henry Miller, is published by Ikaros Publications.

The two correspondents, sharing the same name, are a prime example of lifelong friendship and mutual dedication, playing a leading role in shaping, promoting, and internationally recognizing our modern literature.

Since their student days in Paris during the 1920s, they have shared a common love for the two major figures of that era, Eleftherios Venizelos and Kostis Palamas, while concurrently planning and dreaming of a radical renewal of the literary scene in Greece.

Their correspondence spans the period from 1924 to 1970 and constitutes an extensive chronicle of the social and intellectual conditions in our country during this time, providing a wealth of details and information about both men's private lives and public presences, as well as many other writers.

This correspondence is the most extensive of all the published Seferian correspondences to date and complements Seferis' poetic and creative journey with previously unknown details, addressing "from within" gaps or presenting new versions of lesser-known events and incidents.

At the same time, the defining role of Katsimbalis in shaping the literary generation of the 1930s is highlighted, along with his equally significant contribution to the translation of Modern Greek literature into English, as well as the invaluable services he provided through the publication and editorship of important literary magazines, such as the pre-war "Ta Nea Grammata" and the post-war "Anglo-Hellenic Review".
