Harriet Vanger disappeared thirty-six years ago during a summer festival at the Swedish resort of Hedeby. Despite police investigations, no trace of the sixteen-year-old girl was ever found. Did she run away? Did she fall victim to kidnapping? Or murder? No one knows: the case was closed and everyone forgot the details.
Everyone, except for Harriet's uncle, Henrik Vanger, an elderly industrialist who has made it his life's mission to solve the mystery before he dies. On the walls of his office hang forty-three framed flowers. The first seven were gifts from his niece. The rest arrived anonymously every year on his birthday.
Thus begins "Millennium," a thriller of crime and punishment, sexual deviation, and financial deception, but also a tender love story between a beleaguered journalist and an anorexic girl with tattoos, a whiz at computers. The novel was adapted into a film in 2009, the Swedish movie "Man som hatar kvinnor/The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," directed by Niels Arden Oplev, starring Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace in the leading roles.

Read an excerpt
"The trial had inevitably concluded and anything that could be said had already been said. He did not doubt for a moment that he would be convicted. The court's written decision had come out at ten o'clock on Friday morning, and now the final press release from the reporters waiting in the corridor outside the Courthouse was awaited.
Mikael Blomkvist saw them through the doorway and slowed his step a little. He did not want to discuss the court decision he had just received, but the questions were inevitable and he knew—better than anyone—that they had to be asked and answered. So this is how a criminal feels, he thought. On the wrong side of the microphone."
