Eudemus of Rhodes (second half of the 4th century BC), the first historian of mathematics, was a distinguished student of Aristotle, who held him in great esteem. It is said that the great philosopher was for a long time in a dilemma regarding the question of succession at the Lyceum, as he found it difficult to choose between Theophrastus and Eudemus, due to their multiple qualifications.
Ultimately, he chose Theophrastus, without of course this choice undermining the work of Eudemus. Eudemus was extremely prolific. He wrote works on the history of science, as well as on the positive and theoretical sciences. Many contemporary historians of science attribute adaptations of various Aristotelian works to Eudemus.
It is possible that the work "Eudaimonian Ethics" attributed to Aristotle may actually be the work of Eudemus and serve as a summary of the ethical teachings of the Stagirite philosopher. From Eudemus's vast literary output, almost nothing has survived. Fortunately, some ancient writers and commentators, such as Proclus, Pappus, Theon of Smyrna, Simplicius, Aelian, Boethius, and Porphyry, preserved certain fragments.
Unfortunately, Eudemus is not widely known in modern Greece. This void is being filled by Evangelos Spandagos with this book.
