Description

From the 19th-century state to the strong Greek Republic of the 21st. "The Military History of Modern Greece" is primarily a reading of national awareness, which clearly presents our adventurous journey towards national completion.

Avoiding common exaggerations, the historians who contribute to this three-volume work document not only the heroism and self-sacrifice but also the mistakes that marked the struggles of the Greeks in the 20th century.

The joy of Liberation from German occupation does not last long for our country. Just as the rest of the world is rebuilding from the ruins of World War II, the Greeks engage in a relentless civil war of mutual destruction.

Emerging from the Civil War, Greece finds itself in the Cold War aligned with the side of the West. It participates in the Korean campaign, while the major national issue of Cyprus emerges, which has shaped a relationship of suspicion with its great allies from the 1950s to the present.

At the same time, however, our country is recovering from the wounds of the Occupation and the Civil War, striving to restore democratic institutions and becoming a full and equal member of the strongest international organizations.

The third volume contains the following chapters:

  • IΑ: Stathis Kalivas, Nikos Marantzidis, "The Civil War" (with bibliography)
  • IΒ: Evanthe Chatzivassiliou, "Surviving in the Post-War World" (with bibliography)
  • IΓ: Ioannis Stefanidis, "The Cyprus Issue, 1950-1974" (with bibliography)
  • Anthology of texts on the Cyprus Issue
  • Chronology: Greece
  • Chronology: World
