Description & Specifications

This edition was published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name organized by the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank in collaboration with the Zoumboulakis Gallery and took place in the exhibition space of the Eynard Mansion (from December 16, 2008 to February 15, 2009).

This exhibition presents independently a series of 225 drawings by Yiannis Moralis, created between 1934 and 1994. As N.P. Paisios characteristically states in his introductory note: "The style of the drawings generally follows or heralds, allowing for numerous exceptions, the periods of his painting. However, regarding their function, we can divide the drawings into only two periods with a landmark being the 1970s. Before this landmark, the drawing enjoys relative autonomy in relation to painting; afterwards, it loses this freedom but gains the discipline of the royal road that leads to painting."

It is further confirmed that Moralis is the Greek painter with the most sketches/studies before arriving at the final work. Finally, the importance of Moralis's immense visual memory becomes clear. From the creation of an initial theme on paper to its complete organization on canvas, months, years, or even decades can intervene.

His drawings resemble the seeds of musical motifs that need time within him to sprout, to be organized, and to develop into a song or a complete symphony. Often these motifs are repeated from work to work or from decade to decade. The visual memory of Moralis gains greater significance if we consider that, according to the confession of the painter himself, he does not have the drawings or studies in front of him when he paints, as he does not need them directly because within him exists the essence of their charm.

In the Dictionnaire des idees recues of art history, Picasso has been recorded (incorrectly) as an exceptional draftsman who falls short in color, while Matisse (again incorrectly) is recorded as an exceptional painter in his colors, but lacking in drawing. Fortunately, in the corresponding dictionary of the small history of modern Greek art, Moralis cannot be confined to such (incorrect) molds: he balances with precision and grace like a skilled dancer on the taut rope that (we believe) separates drawing from color.

In the classic question: "Drawing or Color?" posed by Eggonopoulos, Moralis answers without hesitation: both drawing and color, or both drawing and color.
