Eleftherios Venizelos had a more decisive involvement in the Cyprus issue than any other politician in modern Greece.
Having played a leading role in the last Cretan revolutions and in the early steps of the Cretan State, he was the prime minister who included Cyprus in the list of priorities of Greek national claims.
He discussed for the first time with the British the possibility of granting the island to Greece, while instilling in the Greek Cypriots the certainty for the fulfillment of their political goals, following the Balkan Wars and the First World War.
A few years later, in 1931, and after the Asia Minor disaster, he made the harsh and much-debated condemnation of the October Cypriot uprising.
Essentially, Venizelos's policy on the Cyprus issue encapsulates the contradictions and limits of the "national center" in relation to the last irredentist movement in modern Greek history.
This multifaceted involvement of Eleftherios Venizelos in the Cyprus issue is presented comprehensively and highlighted in this current collective volume.
