Description

Nothing in this world, nothing in the other that fits me.

“I am grateful, above all, to Alice Danesi Knutsen, who had the original idea to commission the translation of Caligula from someone whose native language is not Greek but French. This is not unrelated: Camus is part of my culture since my school years when we were taught to appreciate the language of each author - just like his own unique language - and to respect it as such. This respect led me to my work: to retain, as much as possible, the distinctive character of Camus' language.

A language strictly, I would say strictly so, chosen to express his artistic intentions and here more specifically his dramatic intentions. Camus was primarily a man of theater, which he claimed at every opportunity. The dramatic quality is inherent in his speech and is particularly intense in this work. Each line of the actors - and especially that of Caligula himself - is like a stone that is thrown and must definitely hit its target, namely the exact expression of the moods and feelings of each character.

If therefore the work of the translator, their duty, is always to convey with the greatest possible fidelity all the nuances of the author's speech, then I was lucky: which other language would be more suitable to "translate" such a drama as Camus' Caligula than the one that once was - even in its ancient form - the language of the master builders of theater, Sophocles and Euripides? In the struggle I fought to convey Camus' words into the Greek language, I took the side of Camus.” Françoise Arvaniti (from the translator's note in the edition)
