In a newly formed country, economically underdeveloped until 1870, with remnants of morals and practices from its previous national life in many other areas, with a superficial adoption of European standards, with an unformed literary life, with poetry that reinforces romantic falsehoods until 1880, in an era where ideas, imitations, and reproductions intersect and clash from all sides, M.M. seemed `out of the general atmosphere`: daring, original, radical, uncompromising, straightforward and sincere, `incomprehensible` as a writer and as a person.
Deeply educated, informed about events within and outside Greece in the fields of politics, literature, and culture, a meritocrat in a society of non-meritocracy and lethargy. With his contradictions, like all of us. Above all, however, uncompromising, and this comes at a high price, as tragically confirmed by countless examples from the social, political, and spiritual life of modern Hellenism.
Throughout history, Greece has generously (to the point of desperation) honored all sorts of trifles, `spiritual and political charlatans` that float to the shore like roses, according to the wise popular saying. It does not matter that it did not always practically complete what it conceived theoretically. However, it utilized the specific, existing possibilities.
Let us remember once again his young age and his troubled maturity. Did he not advance literature with his narrative idiosyncrasy? This was proven by the innovative theories of younger researchers after 1980, such as those of L. Tsirimokou, D. Maronitis, and other contemporary researchers that we cite in the bibliography.
