This edition was published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art and Thought (ITYS) and the Cultural Foundation of National Bank in the exhibition space of the Eynerd Mansion (April 2, 2008 - July 20, 2008).
The exhibition 'Selective Knowledge' examines the process followed by many artists who select images and information from libraries, archives, and databases to create a personal narrative capable of opening pathways in understanding the functioning of broader systems. This practice is based on the idea of creating a personal collection of objects, printed materials, or data from the internet.
With the spread of photography, cinema, and new media (video, internet, etc.) in the twentieth century, contemporary artists increasingly borrow material from these new sources, abandoning the tradition of older mythological, biblical, or historical themes, and even direct observation, which was so popular in the 19th century. They thus trace new ways of depicting and representing a world that is changing at a rapid pace.
If partial knowledge accepts that we must solve a problem based on incomplete data, selective knowledge expresses a conscious decision of rejection, selection, and acceptance based on need, desire, and expectation, until a story unfolds. Instead of starting from large systems and established truths to analyze political, economic, and social developments, the artists of the exhibition choose multiple discrete pieces and compose them in ways that allow for associations and broader interpretations.
The exhibition features artists: Vangelis Vlachos, Irini Efstathiou, Apostolos Karastergiou, Giorgos Chatzimichalis, Christian Boltanski, Mark Dion, Sam Durant, Nina Fischer and Maroan El Sani, Ivan Grubanov, Candida Hofer, Mark O'Kelly, Armin Linke, Albert Oehlen, Henrik Olesen, Pietro Roccasalva, Allen Ruppersberg.
