The manual "Greek Art and Archaeology," written by the academic Dimitris Plantzos and published in 2011 by Kapon Editions, was chosen by Lockwood Press, based in Atlanta, United States, as its first publishing endeavor in the field of classical archaeology.
The translation of the book was done by British archaeologist Nicola Wardle. On the occasion of the English edition, which is released simultaneously in Greece and Europe by Kapon Editions, the book is also reissued in Greek. The text has been systematically revised, and new sections and illustrations have been added.
This is the first edition of its kind written by a Greek academic and distributed outside Greece. The manual, which has been adopted by many university departments in our country, offers an overview of Greek archaeology from the collapse of the Mycenaean palaces to the end of the Hellenistic kingdoms (1200-30 BC).
It is aimed at archaeology students, as well as anyone interested in a comprehensive and thorough presentation of the main material remains of ancient Greek culture. The major categories of monuments from classical antiquity are systematically presented, with complete illustrations, as a first step in the study, understanding, and interpretation of the culture of classical Greece: architecture and urban planning, sculpture and small-scale sculpture, painting and vase painting, metalwork, jewelry making, and numismatics.
