Neoclassical cities are not identified with a specific urban form in Greece. They are "neoclassical" because they were designed and built during a certain historical period (1830-1920), when neoclassical architecture prevailed.
The neoclassical city is, at its core, a new state, a new way of life - it is the pure expression of the modern spirit in the 19th century. It represents Europeanization and progress, applied to the urban environment.
This richly illustrated book is based on field research and photography, as well as extensive study of related sources, from 19th-century newspapers and magazines to contemporary monographs.
It includes a selection of neoclassical cities from all over Greece, from those showcased as "neoclassical cities" (Athens, Patras, Nafplio, and Ermoupoli) to others, the so-called "historical centers," which combine neoclassical features with traditional traces (Symi and Pilio) or, finally, cities in regions that were slow to integrate into Greece (Chania, Volos, Ioannina, Thessaloniki, and Kavala).
