The subject of Kanellopoulos's studies and subsequently his research and university teaching, his persistent orientation towards "purely" Western European thought, and his lifelong dialogue with the universal issues of culture and the fundamental existential questions of man, his contribution to the effort to develop systematic philosophical and generally theoretical reflection in the Greek context, and of course, his entry (in 1935) and continuous fifty-year presence in the political life of the country, provide more than enough reasons to explain the fact that modern Greek literature is not among the main subjects of his writing activity.
