Description

This book by David Harvey was published in English in 2016 under the title The Ways of the World. The title accurately and ambiguously reflects its content. The title of the Greek edition, Roads and Ways of the World, highlights both the accuracy regarding the content and its ambiguity.

On one hand, it indicates the author's relationship with his scientific subject, geography, the social organization of space, and the changes that occur in space, on a large, global scale, and on a small, local scale. Harvey carves out paths in space and time and invites us to follow him. He takes us on journeys to cities and countries, from the Paris of the Commune to the deindustrialization of Britain and today's China.

On the other hand, the title of the book captures the author's personal journey in his science, the starting point, the influences he received, his quests, turning points and revisions, his apprenticeship, ultimately, both theoretical and applied. Harvey suggests ways of a different nature: pathways through theories and concepts, retrieving, analyzing, recomposing, rejecting, and modifying a rich legacy, a theoretical arsenal that is judged by its ability to “disenchant” the world, to transcend the constraints of phenomenon and make it intellectually accessible and understandable.
