When I wrote the following pages, or rather the greater part of them, I was living alone in the woods, a mile away from my nearest neighbor, in a house that I had built entirely by myself on the shores of Walden Pond, near Concord, Massachusetts, and my only means of livelihood was my hands. I lived there for two years and two months. Now I find myself once again residing in civilization.
In Walden (1854), one of the emblematic works of American literature, American writer and naturalist philosopher Henry David Thoreau describes his experiences during the two years he stayed (1845-1847) in a cabin he built himself on the shores of Walden Pond, near Concord, Massachusetts.
Thoreau, a pioneer for many of the modern ecological movements, with the motto 'let us embark on the adventure of life now,' discovers the power of contact with Nature and advocates for an alternative, simpler, and unconventional way of life, in contrast to the spirit of industrialization of his time.
For two years, he tries to combine 'the robustness of the wild with the spirituality of the civilized man,' an act with symbolic value for the collective American imagination, as it renews the tradition of landing in a wild place and creating a 'haven' of life there. This revelatory experience allows Thoreau to describe, as if through a magnifying glass, and to better understand American life.
A prophetic ecological manifesto and simultaneously a work that holds a place in the global testament of the author, Walden describes the radical as well as utopian endeavor of returning to Nature in a poignant and disarming way. It is no coincidence that after almost a century and a half, it continues to evoke emotion and maintain a relevant discourse, as it highlights, almost prophetically, the negative consequences of humanity's detachment from the environment.
