After the revolution of 1843, the Greek state stopped servicing the loans it had entered into up to that point. The Great Powers did not react, probably because the revolution limited the role of Otto and the demands to integrate the island of Crete into the state.

At that time, Alexandros Mavrocordatos, addressing Ioannis Kolettis, who had recently become Prime Minister, said: "Let's see now how we will repay our debts!" The cunning Kolettis had the answer: "Rather, we should see how we will not repay them!" How much do we really know about Modern Greek History?
