Communication Protocol

Most SSDs use SATA III or PCI Express.

Almost all 2.5" SSDs connect via SATA III while most M.2 SSDs connect via PCI Express.

PCI Express connection offers higher speeds, but this is mainly noticeable in demanding applications (high-resolution video processing, transferring large files, etc.) and is not necessary for everyday use.

SATA III

Modern hard drive connection standard.

The majority of SSD hard drives use this standard. The motherboard must support it for the disk to operate at its maximum potential.
Write Speed

Indicative size for the maximum speed of the hard disk during data recording. The larger the size, the faster the data recording.

For an SSD that uses the SATA III protocol, the average recording speed is 300MB/s, while for one with NVMe it is 1200MB/s.

These differences make sense in particularly demanding use cases (e.g. high-resolution video editing). For most users, the differences will not be noticeable.
Read Speed

Indicative size for the maximum speed of the hard disk during data reading. The larger the size, the faster the data reading speed.

If someone is looking for a reliable SSD, stay away from this one. If you simply need a large storage space without necessarily looking at the numbers, then it's fine.

WD has made serious mistakes in the construction of this particular SSD. Initially, the same SSD has been released in two different versions with two different firmware from two different countries. Some have noticed significant performance issues, while others approach the nominal speeds. I wasn't among the lucky ones.

Read barely above 500 and write not even 330 (when 3D Nand promises 530). Most likely, we are talking about a 2D Nand SSD that is mistakenly (or intentionally) sold as 3D Nand.

The system that was tested was on x570 with 2nd generation Ryzen. A comparable Samsung 970 performs better on the same machine. I expected it not to have the nominal speeds, but 200MB lower is unacceptable. With an additional 20-30€, one can get a more reliable SSD.

I will try to return it to the store.

Update 21/03/2021

In the end, I didn't return it to the store, as I tried to find a solution through RMA. I contacted WD directly, which officially acknowledged the problem (I have all the emails) and we started the RMA process. The RMA was fast, completed in about 7 days.

Unfortunately, the new drive doesn't have the speeds that WD claims. In a second communication with WD, they told me that I don't have the right to a second RMA and offered me a 15% discount on any other drive they had on their site.

I bought it to replace the Samsung 840 pro that my MacBook had been using for 5 years because it started to slow down in speeds (reaching 250mb/s read and write). The drive is very good in terms of speeds (490write 510read), but I also noticed a difference in battery consumption. I use it for DJing and I can say that it covers me to the maximum in terms of loading songs, but now it can also hold all my playlists without needing a second drive for music.
