In the 71 years he lived, a series of major and shocking events occurred, in which the general with the iron fist had taken part - perhaps, in some way, he left his own mark on several of these events. First in the ousting of Otto, where he played a role…

“...Athens under Bayraktaris became a lawful city, a peaceful city, a cultured city. In a few weeks the entire population was disarmed. The tips of shoes and the hairstyles of rascals and rogues were cut off. Fearsome figures were transformed into innocent lambs. The unemployed were forced to work. The thieves were sent on a one-way journey. The hashish dens were closed, and the beggars disappeared. In the taverns, they drank wine and did not shed blood. The number and reputation of the cowardly tough guys who once dominated and had their headquarters in Psyrris Square greatly diminished, and they became comic figures, completely exhausted by the heavy hand of Bayraktaris, for which a special statue should one day be erected in the heroes' square…” (article from the newspaper Scrip)
