PLA (polylactic acid) is one of the oldest and most widely used materials in the 3D printing community, mainly because of its advantages as a multifunctional and environmentally friendly thermoplastic.

It is organic and biodegradable and can be easily mixed with other components to affect its final properties such as flexibility and metallic appearance. The colorless form of Real PLA has a transparent off-white shade and has a printing temperature between 195 - 205 degrees (depending on the characteristics of the hot end).

The darker shades of Real may require a few additional degrees of temperature due to the dyeing process. The filament should extrude smoothly and appear slightly glossy.

PLA is denser and more durable than ABS but is more brittle and prone to cracking under high stress. It is also less resistant to outdoor weather conditions (UV light and water) than other common thermoplastics.

PLA can be printed well on a non-heated surface using Blue Painters or Kapton tape, as well as most 3D printing adhesives. For convenience and comfort, it is recommended to use spray such as 3DLAC on a glass surface. A low bed temperature between 50 - 60 degrees further reduces the likelihood of warping and makes it easier to remove the final print once the printing surface has cooled down.
