PLA (polylactic acid) filament is one of the oldest and most widely used materials in the 3D printing community, mainly due to its advantages as a versatile and environmentally friendly thermoplastic. It is organic and biodegradable, and can easily be combined with other substances to affect its final properties, such as flexibility and metallic appearance.

The color of Real PLA is transparent white and has a printing temperature between 195 - 205 degrees (depending on the characteristics of the hot end). The darker shades of Real may require a few extra degrees of temperature due to the coloring process. The filament should extrude smoothly and appear slightly glossy.

PLA is denser and more durable than ABS, but it is more brittle and sensitive to cracking under high pressure. It is also less resistant to external conditions (UV light and water) than other common thermoplastics (such as Nylon, ABS, and PETG).

PLA can print well on a non-heated surface using Blue Painters or Kapton tape, as well as most 3D printing adhesive labels. For convenience, the use of spray like 3DLAC on a glass surface is recommended. A low bed temperature between 50 - 60 degrees further reduces the likelihood of warping and makes it easier to remove the final print once the surface has cooled down.
