Greece, from a geostrategic perspective, is part of the Rimland, the Ring of Land, which acts as a bulwark against the downward trends of the Eurasian Land Power towards the Mediterranean, as understood, from an Anglo-Saxon viewpoint, as a 'potentially homogeneous strategic threat.'

This Spykman reading of the balances of international power also constitutes the main axis of the geostrategic perception of the international reality from the American side, regardless of political positioning.

The two fundamental party representatives of the political reality within the US (Republicans and Democrats) differ only in the emphasis they place on exercising a more overt or cloaked hegemonic role of the US in the world.

Given that the US determines the main European strategic choices in the fields of Defense and Security, and will continue to do so for the coming years - due to the incapacity or even deliberate neglect of Europeans - as well as since the US is the main regulator of affairs in the SE Mediterranean, necessarily, the geostrategic perception of the Greek space, as well as the Defense Policy of our country, must take seriously into account the US perception of the broader Mediterranean Space and, consequently, their major strategic choices.

Within this framework, the role of the Armed Forces in protecting the maritime supply routes, which constitute the only energy axis of the country, as well as the legal, political, and, primarily, defensive framework of this protection, should also be investigated.

Perhaps, this requirement will also shape the New Doctrine of Special Operations, determining their form and equipment. A similar contemplation should be presented regarding other forms of energy that may potentially serve as targets in the event of power projection operations and/or war preparations by other countries.
