At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, the Austrian Sigmund Freud, physiologist and psychiatrist, laid the foundations of psychoanalysis as a therapeutic method with his studies and revolutionized the way modern man perceives concepts such as consciousness and sexuality. In his Introduction to Psychoanalysis (Vorlesungen zur Einfuhrung in die Psychoanalyse, 1917), Freud presents verbatim to the general public the texts of a series of 28 lectures he delivered at the University of Vienna from 1915 to 1917, aiming to introduce a not purely scientific audience to the basic concepts, principles, and methods of psychoanalysis. This is one of his most popular works, which, thanks to its accessible style, has maintained great readership from its first publication to the present day.
