Description & Specifications

This is an anthology of lesser-known short prose pieces by the great author: it includes stories that were published in various magazines before his death, but mostly a large number of prose and sketches of stories found scattered in his notebooks and diaries.

The translation follows the relevant German critical edition and, therefore, is based on Kafka's original text, free from the arbitrary editing by Max Brod. The reader will rediscover in these pieces the bureaucratic style, the often bizarre syntax, the play with contradictions, and the existential concern familiar from other texts by Kafka.

However, these short prose pieces also hold surprises: the idiosyncratic use of themes from Greek mythology, aphoristic observations, and a strong sense of humor are some of the elements that come to enrich the image of the author of The Trial and The Castle.

Starting from very short, unknown prose pieces of a few paragraphs or pages and culminating in the clearly better-known and longer -although unfinished- Construction, the volume includes a total of 46 texts and is complemented by an introduction, extensive bibliographical references for the published stories, and a biographical note about the author.
