The three major Christian Confessions today accept a different number of books from the Old Testament, yet they all share a common element in their canons, which is the classification system of the books based on the character of the biblical works.
Thus, the books are classified according to their character into three groups: "Historical," "Poetic-Teaching," and "Prophetic." The tradition of the Orthodox Church accepts as "canonical" (books that belong to the canon), in addition to the 39 books of the Jewish Bible (which are titled according to the Septuagint), 10 additional ones (1 Esdras, Tobit, Judith, 1-2-3 Maccabees, Wisdom of Solomon, Wisdom of Sirach, Baruch, and the Letter of Jeremiah).
The Roman Catholic Church followed a similar practice, ultimately accepting 46 books, which it distinguishes as "proto-canonical" and "deuterocanonical." Finally, the Churches that emerged from the Reformation accepted the canon of the Jewish Bible with the 39 books.
