Description & Specifications

“Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” This motto from the Bible, presented on a separate page, alone, at the beginning of the novel “Anna Karenina”, prompts the reader to reflect on Tolstoy's true intention regarding the composition of his material.

This ominous prophecy, which sounds from afar like the gallop of some Angel of Destruction approaching with a sword, concerns only the adulterous wife who abandoned her husband and child to follow her handsome lover? Or does it, indirectly but surely, threaten with the punishment of annihilation a small class that has built its arrogant superiority upon the suffering and cries of an entire people?

It is surely no coincidence that Tolstoy began writing “Anna Karenina” (1875) four years after the Paris Commune sent chills down the spines of France and all the oppressed peoples of Europe. The Paris Commune was the first practical application in world history of the utopia that envisioned man as truly free, autonomous, self-governing, and in a relationship of justice and equality with his fellow man. It was the first and the last. It lasted one month. And it was drowned in blood by a callous, unconscious class, horrific in the application of its reprisals.

The characters, the setting, the time, and the plot in this novel intertwine into a strong composition where the individual elements seem to “be exactly this and could not be anything else,” in an inseparable and definitive way. This is precisely the main characteristic of great novels: a sense of destiny that is instilled in the reader that “this is how things happened and in no case could they have happened otherwise.” [Excerpt from the text on the back cover of the edition]
