Description & Specifications

“Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” This motto from the Bible, which is placed on a separate page, alone, at the beginning of the novel Anna Karenina, provokes thoughts in the reader regarding Tolstoy’s true intention towards the composition of his material. This ominous prophecy, which can be heard from afar like the galloping of some Exterminating Angel approaching with a sword, concerns only the adulterous wife who abandoned her husband and child to follow her beautiful lover? Or does it, indirectly but certainly, threaten with the punishment of annihilation a small class that has built its arrogant superiority upon the martyrdom and cries of an entire people?

It is certainly no coincidence that Tolstoy began writing Anna Karenina (1875) four years after the Paris Commune had sent shivers of horror throughout France and to all oppressed peoples of Europe. The Paris Commune was the first practical application in the history of the world of the utopia that wanted man to be truly free, autonomous, self-governing, and in a relationship of justice and equality with his fellow man. It was the first and the last. It lasted a month. And it was drowned in blood by a heartless, unconscious class, horrific in the implementation of its reprisals.

The characters, the setting, the time, and the plot in this novel intertwine in a solid composition where the individual parts seem to “be exactly that and could not be anything else,” in an inextricable and final way. This is precisely the main characteristic of great novels: a sense of fate that is instilled in the reader that “this is how things happened and under no circumstances could they have happened differently.” [Excerpt from the text on the back cover of the edition]
