Believing that "no myth is a fairy tale," but simply "a pre-scientific way of thinking," as well as that "the history of every nation begins with its mythology, and national mythology is somewhat like an introduction to national history," he highlights the logic and the fragments of truth that the biblical myths embody.

He seeks not the truth of biblical events, since the Bible conveys "other kinds of truths, of a metaphysical order," but the "truth of common sense."
