Description & Specifications

This research focuses on the translation of the Holy Scriptures attributed to N. Vambas.

It briefly discusses the translation of the entire Holy Scripture, prepared by Archimandrite (and later Metropolitan of Ternopil) Hilarion of Sinai for the B.F.B.S. in Constantinople. There is a historical relationship between these two translations.

Although there are two clearly distinct and independent translations from each other, both represent successive stages of the same effort by the Biblical Society to create a translation of the Holy Scriptures for the Greeks.

Moreover, these translations are closely connected not only as two aspects of the same issue, but also because the failure of the B.E. in the first effort led to the drafting of the second, which was no longer carried out in the Metropolitan see of Orthodoxy, the Ecumenical Patriarchate, but first in the Ionian Islands (1829-1833) and finally in free Greece (1833), where the prevailing political climate ensured the possibility of success for the endeavor.

The issue of Hilarion's translation is thus examined within the context of the prehistory of Vambas' translation.
