The book The Delphic Oracle and its Museum, by the professor of Archaeology at the University of Athens, Panos Valavanis, presents a modern interpretation of the historical and archaeological data related to this significant site of the ancient world, which, through the humanitarian innovations attributed to Apollo and the sayings of the Pythia, largely shaped the history and values of ancient Greek civilization.
The three archaeological sites (the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, and the Gymnasium) are presented along with their architectural evolution, as well as the Museum, where the exhibited works are related to the space from which they originate, thereby providing a unified and comprehensive image of the sanctuary.
Separate chapters deal with the Pythian festival, the divination process, and the interpretation of Delphic matters, in an effort to address the difficult-to-explain phenomena of prophecy and the impressive influence that the sanctuary exerted for the greater part of ancient Greek history.
The book, written in a simple and understandable manner, includes the latest data from relevant research on Delphi, while its photographs capture the significant work of enhancement that has been carried out in recent years.
