The Sun occupied half the sky; an arch from one edge of the horizon to the other, reaching high enough to touch the zenith. Above it stretched an endless black sky broken only by a handful of stars. The Sun itself had a softer black color, the color of ash, except for the few spots where life still existed. Rivers ran through it, twisting ribbons of bright red, veins of fire on its weary face. Its worm children had studied it long ago, in the old days when they played with telescopes, and each fiery channel had a name, although most of them have now been forgotten. Where the rivers met and joined, one could occasionally see orange lakes smoking, and there were other places where red and yellow flashes pulsed beneath the ash-gray crust.
