Description

The ORDER HAD COME from the depths of the Pentagon: "Kill Makarios"! In the always turbulent Middle East, Cyprus was targeted by many powers in 1973, whose interests clashed. The relationships of the national leader of the Mediterranean island with the dictatorial regime of Ioannidis in Athens were extremely tense. Everyone held their breath for the next step.

In the dim light of diplomatic backrooms, the dark figure of the scheming Kissinger pulled the strings. The "Castro of the Mediterranean" had to be removed from the equation! Until the last moment, Makarios did not believe that the generals would dare. And the Turks were waiting for the criminal coup to proceed with the invasion. The attack with a hail of bullets on the Presidential Palace opened the curtain on the Cypriot tragedy.

GIANNIS MARIS provides the account that shook Hellenism. How the attack occurred, what the role of the various sides was, how Makarios escaped. The national leader himself gives his testimony to the popular author. And GEORGOS LEONTARITIS, a close collaborator of Maris in his journalistic career, complements the political landscape of the time with unknown details.

For the bullets for the archbishop had other targets as well: A reading with "suspense," reminiscent of the most exciting spy novels. Yet, it was not a novel, but the grand adventure of Cypriot Hellenism…
