Description

The Ungoverned States consist of three volumes: The Club (1961), Ariadne (1962), The Bat (1965). The action is set respectively in Jerusalem, Cairo, and Alexandria. A novel that masterfully tames a torrential historical material, giving a human voice to the epic and the drama of World War II, at a time when the future of nations was at stake and Greece's fate was cast in dice.

Thanks to various flashbacks, the trilogy brings to life earlier periods, from the interwar years, the pale paradise of adolescence with the first romantic stirrings of some heroes, to ancient Egypt recalling the memories of ancestors. The work culminates with the uprising of the Army and the Fleet, the April 1944 movement, and its dramatic suppression, while, with the epilogue of the third volume, we are transported to Thessaloniki after the Civil War, in 1954, where a haunting requiem for the lost fighters is heard.

However, Tsirkas did not write a chronicle, but a work of art. Historical accuracy and imagination rarely come together in such a harmonious whole. With a strong hand moving large volumes, he sensitively records the echoes of events in the consciousness and relationships of people, sculpting vibrant characters that will remain in the pantheon of literary heroes.

Political machinations, uncontrolled ambitions in the vortex of war, but also beautiful dreams and an abundance of humanity and courage mark the essence of the 'Ungoverned States', where love, dominant, weaves and unweaves the thread of an exciting plot.

At the same time, with the polyphony of narration and other modern techniques, the author manages to merge modernity with tradition. A liminal work that stamped Greek letters in this 'short 20th century'.
