This book is a translation of D. Philippides' thesis at the University of Michigan in 1973, focusing on a holistic study of the rural system of Olympus, an isolated community in the northern part of Karpathos. The author lived there for a year and a half, collecting fieldwork material according to the principles of social anthropology.

The aim of the thesis was to bridge the gaps between the approaches of architects (to traditional material culture), social scientists (to the structure of rural communities), and geographers (to the integration of such communities into regional systems), through their interrelations as developed in the field of traditional architecture and urban planning.

This research examines how social organization affects the traditional frame of reference, especially as processes of change accelerate as we approach the present, and how behaviors are influenced by the natural environment. It thus attempts to identify any discernible differences in the above dual correspondence during three selected periods of local history.

In this way, it identifies what elements have changed over time and what has remained the same; it also recognizes those that are repeated and define the structure of the Olympus system as a recognizable social and spatial unity.
