Description & Specifications

The essays in this volume offer the international academic community the broadest possible picture of the historical evolution and main trends in the history of art in Greece, as well as the level of academic achievements in this field.

The study of contemporary European art history has systematically developed as a specialized discipline both in the academic and public sphere in Greece since the late 1970s. In recent years, the history of Western art has begun to be regularly taught in Greek universities, both at the undergraduate level and in postgraduate and doctoral programs.

During this same period, an increasing number of Greek art historians have been educated through undergraduate and postgraduate studies at recognized universities mainly in France, Great Britain, Germany, and the United States, thus contributing, as they return to work in their homeland, to the polyphonic renewal of the theoretical and methodological tools of art history in Greece.

The ideological peculiarities and objective difficulties of establishing art history as an academic discipline in Greece are thoroughly reflected in the pages of this volume, while the theoretical and methodological directions of both historiography and academic teaching are meticulously analyzed.

At the same time, there is a discussion about the efforts made over the last twenty years to establish a permanent academic community through positive actions, such as organizing regular conferences, scientific workshops, and lectures, under the auspices of the Greek Art Historians Society (EEIT).
