The book is included in the Evdoxos bibliography database (book code: 77109884). It is one of the most important clinical texts written by Freud in his 70s, revising his earlier views on the contentious issue of anxiety.
Here he articulates his so-called second theory of anxiety, referring to childhood anxiety, realistic anxiety, neurotic anxiety, automatic anxiety, and primarily anxiety as a danger signal in response to any threatening situation, which can lead to either inhibition or the formation of symptoms based on the ego.
The feeling of anxiety exhibits certain characteristics, the investigation of which promises to further illuminate us. Anxiety maintains a distinctive relationship with anticipation; it is anxiety in relation to something. Is there a character of indeterminacy and absence of an object associated with this? The correct use of language even changes its name when anxiety finds an object, replacing it then with fear.
Apart from its relationship with danger, anxiety additionally has another relationship, that with neurosis, which we have been trying to clarify for a long time. This raises the question of why not all anxiety reactions are neurotic, as we recognize so many as normal; ultimately, the difference between neurotic anxiety and realistic anxiety requires an in-depth analysis.
