The Hero of the Disappeared (a novel more commonly known by the title given by Max Brod during its first publication: America) features the sixteen-year-old Karl Rossmann, who is sent to America by his parents due to his romantic relationship with a maid.
There, the young immigrant will strive hard to integrate into the new environment of "unlimited opportunities" – only to find himself, in a decidedly Kafkaesque manner, caught in an endless series of futile adventures, as, no matter how hard he works with characteristic adolescent naivety and kindness, his goal remains unattainable...
Written before The Trial and The Castle, this novel is nonetheless the most optimistic of Kafka's works. The portrayal of the "dream-like" America of immigrants (which captivated the imagination of the young Central European writer), the reduction of the capitalist economic system to a labyrinth in which even the best intentions are lost (in a book that could even be characterized as political), and above all the power of the symbols that – as is the case in truly great works of literature – continue to be enriched with new interpretations until today, constitute the main characteristics of the work.
