Description & Specifications

“I am saddened that women are systematically undervalued, gladly accepting the insignificant attention that men believe is appropriate to show to the female gender. All these little rituals seem so ridiculous to me that I can hardly contain my nerves when I see a man hastening to eagerly pick up a fallen handkerchief or open a door, at a moment when a lady could do it herself with one motion.”

Writing in a time when the struggle for human rights had led to the great revolutions in America and France, Mary Wollstonecraft vigorously expressed her opinion on women's independence in 1792. With passion and immediacy, she attacked the prevailing societal view that regarded women as decorative elements and demanded equal education for girls and boys, the end of prejudices, and women's dependence on their profession and not on their partner.

The recognition of women's rights was sometimes met with admiration and sometimes with outrage; however, it established her as the "mother" of modern feminism. "I wish that women had power not over men, but over themselves."

Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) was an English writer, philosopher, and advocate for women's rights. She is considered by many to be the first feminist. The recognition of women’s rights (1792) was her most famous work, in which she passionately and argueably asserts that women are not inferior to men and that the mistaken impression to the contrary is created solely because they do not receive the proper education. She died shortly after giving birth to her daughter, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, at the age of just thirty-eight.
