“Smile please!” advised the old photographer with the black sleeves to families, soldiers, newlyweds, and random pretty faces who wanted to see their own face printed on paper.
Laughter is free, it costs nothing, especially when it remains silent; it's just a simple trick of the lips. It is given away as easily as the eyes that sparkle or the little cough that comes and goes unaccompanied.
No photographer or portraitist would of course think to change their request for the worse; they couldn’t say, “Start crying for a moment!”, “Faint for a second!”, “Scream in pain!” or at least “Drown in your own saliva!”, not to mention the terrifying “Breathe, don’t breathe!” that you hear from the microphone when they put you in the CT scanner.
Intense emotions remind one of drama, they are difficult and exhausting, and no one has them in their pocket; unlike laughter, there’s no problem. Just a little spark in the eyes, lips bursting into a smile, and the nostrils slightly expanding, laughter is ready and waiting on a plate.
