In our country, the in-depth analysis of the emergence of the relatively modern phenomenon of Islamist "zealotry" (according to the expression of Professor Ioannis Matzis) and its connection with the principles of Geopolitics began with the organization by the Ionian University of the conference "Europe - Central Islam: New Geopolitical Dynamics" (October 9-11, 1991) and with the book Geography of the Islamic Movement in the Middle East (1992).
