The wonderful Balomatou is a simple farce, in pure classical style, where the spirit of a woman is described, as all women are, and tenderly becomes a defender of the human soul. Thus, Balomatou is both a type and an archetype; it is, at the same time, a primal creature and a myth of our purely unfulfilled illusion. Through Balomatou, Lorca wishes to express the struggle between reality and imagination that exists in the background of every being.
Lorca himself characterizes this work as a "violent farce in two acts and a prologue." Nevertheless, its theme, in a sense, goes beyond the farce, as it aligns more with a smile and a stylized style; in short, it is a "comic and humorous scream," which is also Lorca's only non-tragic farce. Even so, it does not belong to the genre of comedy as we know it, but is a poetic work that contains grotesque elements and characters.
