In 1878, with the Convention of Chania, the Porte was compelled to grant Crete a semi-autonomous regime. The General Governor is appointed by the Sultan, but the General Assembly of Cretans is elected. In the Assembly, two political formations emerged: the Conservatives and the Liberals, or, more popularly, “the Karavanades” and the “Barefooted.” In the spring of 1889, the twenty-five-year-old lawyer Eleftherios Venizelos is elected as a representative with the Liberals who won the elections.
In the sessions, he demonstrated the power of his rhetorical skills abundantly. However, the Conservatives, enraged by their defeat, proceeded with a premature revolutionary movement, which was suppressed. Eleftherios, who although disagreed, stood in solidarity with the revolutionaries, fled to Athens to avoid arrest, where he suffered from the harsh cold, uncertainty, and the pangs of love – his fiancée Maria Eleftheriou had remained in Chania.
In the correspondence of the engaged couple, a mix of political assessments, bubbling emotions, reminiscences, plans for their common future, and everyday problems are recorded – in short, the public and the private. In the extensive “Introduction” by M. Z. Kopidakis, the aspects of the Cretan Issue, the sequence of events, the resurgence of Islamic fanaticism, and the failure of the Islamization of Christians are discussed.
Somewhat more thoroughly, the “unpleasant stay” in Athens, Eleftherios's arduous effort to learn French, and the personalities of the “sensitive” politician and compassionate Maria are explored.
