The Adjustment Period is a work that begins much earlier, at the time when the family is formed, when two people decide to live together to build what they will later call "their family."

An unusual work, seemingly touching the boundaries of "comedy," this digestible genre of theater that ends happily. However, at its core, it is a study of the causes that led to the disarray of the family - and ultimately its dissolution - with the main cause being the initial wrong choice of spouse.

Both couples in the play almost knowingly make the wrong choice of partner, yet they do not have the moral courage to admit it. The unhealthy fantasies of Ralph and George mesh with the neurotic needs of Isabella and Dorothy, and the emotional wreckage of the four supposedly becomes a "happy end" when the two couples resolve their apparent differences and express the desire to continue their married lives.
