Description

Vasilis Vasilikos receives in 1971 in Paris, where he had been in self-imposed exile since 1967, a registered envelope from his father, Nikos: "It was the diary that you will soon read, dear reader. My father, I remembered, had mentioned it a couple of times. That he had kept a diary from the Asia Minor Campaign... And here it was now in my hands, in a leather-bound rectangular album, handwritten, clean, transcribed from his notes at the front..."

Influenced by my father's diary, I set out to study the records of the Trial of the Six that Alekos Levidis had given me two years earlier in Geneva... The records of that sensational trial which culminated in the execution of the six who were deemed responsible for the Asia Minor Disaster were in a volume of about 700 pages... I dove headfirst into reading the records, and then I conceived the idea of a work which, summarizing the essence of the trial, without additions or alterations, would pulsate with a peculiar theatricality.” (from the Preface of the book)

The Diary of the Asia Minor Campaign (1918-1922) – a personal testimony of the war conflicts and the tragic conclusion of the front's collapse, written by the father – offers valuable insights as a historical source and records, with succinct and direct language, narrative skill and shocking descriptions, the sufferings of a twenty-two-year-old youth experiencing the nightmare of war which would result in the national catastrophe of 1922.

The Trial of the Six – based on the stenographic records of the newspaper Proia and edited by the son – presents, in the concise manner of a peculiar theatrical play, one of the most dramatic episodes of the National Schism: the trial of the eight considered to be responsible for the Disaster in front of an extraordinary military court (October 31 - November 15, 1922). Two documentary works from a tragic period that marked modern Greek history.
