Call it oddity, call it fate, I happen to have lived what I lived and turned it into poetry. If I had not lived it and had still written it, then maybe I would have been a great poet. NIKOS KAVVADIAS, October 1974
NEW SIGNIFICANT ELEMENTS about Nikos Kavvadias are coming to light forty-four years after his death. Following years of research by journalist and scholar Michalis Geledakis, a volume is presented with unpublished and unarchived work, unknown interviews of the poet, his maritime file, the ships he traveled on, unpublished correspondence, rare testimonies, unpublished photographs, his relationship with George Seferis, and other findings with explanatory texts and comments.
This edition enriches and redefines the reading and study of the "Ideal and Undeserving Lover, of the distant seas and the blue points," who remains one of the most popular and widely read Greek poets.
The mysterious human-geographical world of Kolia, as his friends called him, becomes even more fascinating, with a constant backdrop of endless hours of solitude "on the back of the sea," where the only companion was the sound of Morse signals.
